Description
Built on the Reasoned Leadership framework, developed by Dr David M Robertson, MSL, VL2.
Two options means one is missing
Most bad decisions start as a two-option argument made under pressure. The Three Rule Method replaces that with three steps in strict order: Basic Logic, then Cause and Effect, then Occam’s Razor. You separate facts from feelings, set the extremes aside, build three viable options, look two steps past the first effect, and choose the option with the fewest assumptions that still fits your goal.
From today’s decision to next year’s forecast
- Decision Worksheet and Pocket Card: a fillable one-page worksheet with a how-to page and a worked example, plus a wallet card to keep the method on hand.
- Forecast Workbook: the extended form of the method for projections months or years out, organized by the three pillars of strategic forecasting: environmental scanning, scenario planning and influence mapping, with a backup plan and quarterly reviews.
- Forecast Tracker: a spreadsheet that logs each forecast against what actually happened, so you can see whether your high-confidence calls really are more accurate.
- TRM Companion: AI instructions and a reference file for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok. Decision mode walks you through the sequence and counts assumptions; Forecast mode runs the extended pass, names a backup and sets your next review date.
Good to know
- Works in a regular chat with nothing to install. The tracker opens in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.
- Forecasts are best-educated guesses from current information, and the method can’t account for other people changing their decisions. The kit says so plainly and builds in reviews to keep you updated.
- Pairs with the Contrastive Inquiry Bundle: pick the best option here, then attack it there.
- License: use it yourself and share it with one team you lead or work on. You can use the method and companion in client sessions you run. No resale or sharing beyond your team.
